Nightcap at Starbucks

If there's one thing I'm addicted to, it's coffee.  And what perfect place to go for coffee in the middle of the night than Starbucks!  Compared to Gloria Jean's Coffee and Seattle's Best, Starbucks is way above them on my standards.  Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf?  Ah, that's a different story.

I just love the ambiance in Starbucks Coffee shops.  Although it is always packed with people any time of day that it's almost always impossible to get a good seat (love 'em couches!); and even if people's chatter mixed with the soothing aroma of coffee fills the air, I still find it very homey and quite relaxing.  A very nice place to hang around if you don't feel like going home just yet.

Love the caption: "When we're together, snowmen come to life!" >_<

Love is...

It’s but human instinct to protect and deeply care for the people most important in our lives.  We would rather be hurt than see them in pain.  I know hurt and pain are so much a part of life, but to see those whom we greatly treasure and care for struggle with it, is something we can never endure.  I guess, people who love will always be like this.  It doesn't matter if the one we love is the worst person on earth, in our eyes and hearts, he or she will always be "perfect"…  and would always complete us, don’t you think?

What Love Means to 4 to 8 Year-Olds...

I just got this in my e-mail (like, 5 minutes ago).  It's actually a chain letter but this is one of the many chain letters I've received in the mail that is essentially worth reading so I decided to post it.

What Love means to a 4-8 year-old...

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds,

'What does love mean?'

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.  See what you think:

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.  So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.'

Rebecca- age 8

'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.'

Billy - age 4

'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.'

Karl - age 5

'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.'

Chrissy - age 6

'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.'

Terri - age 4

'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.'

Danny - age 7

'Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more.  My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss'

Emily - age 8

'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.'

Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)

'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,'

Nikka - age 6
(we need a few million more Nikkas on this planet)

'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.'

Noelle - age 7

'Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.'

Tommy - age 6

'During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.  He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore.'

Cindy - age 8

'My mommy loves me more than anybody.
You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.'

Clare - age 6

'Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.'

Elaine-age 5

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.'

Chris - age 7

'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.'

Mary Ann - age 4

'I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.'

Lauren - age 4

'When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.' (what an image)

Karen - age 7

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross.'

Mark - age 6

'You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.'

Jessica - age 8

And the final one...

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.

Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,

'Nothing, I just helped him cry'

I Got THAI'd: A Photolog

My trip to Thailand, though short-lived, was quite an experience ~ great place, new culture, new language, different people (on second thought, not much, as we look somehow the same), and… food adventures.

Bits and pieces of Thailand in photos...

1.  The BTS or Skytrain

It's similar to the MRT in the Philippines, only more spacious and the seats more comfortable.  But the very big difference?... the people are way more disciplined (no offense meant there. just objective observation).

2.  MBK Center, Bangkok

The mall has an entrance connected to the BTS or Skytrain

Swensen's in MBK Mall

UCC Cafe at the basement level

Right at the heart of Bangkok and connected to the BTS is this shopping mall.  What else can I say... it's a shopping haven (one of the, actually).  It is the most visited mall in Bangkok because of the varied items and reasonable prices.

3.  Siam Ocean World in Siam Paragon, Bangkok

A Chevy Fish Tank (no less)!

One of Bangkok's famous attractions is this underground marine showcase.  Located at the basement of Siam Paragon, it has hundreds of marine life species on display in the largest tanks I've ever seen.  It is amazing how each and every fish tank in the whole Oceanarium re-creates the natural underwater sea conditions - water salinity, temperatures, and all.

4.  The Grand Palace

Wall murals, intricately & beautifully done

5.  The Vimanmek Mansion or Teak Palace

NO to Plastic Bags: Going Green, One Step at a Time

The lush greens of Los Banos, Laguna

I first encountered the plastic bag ban from where else but the suburban town of Los Banos in Laguna, Philippines.  We went there for a family leisure trip and I was surprised (and somehow inconvenienced at the time) to have to carry a big (used) box of goodies coming out of the supermarket.  For smaller items, they use the brown bag or for any number of items that can fit in their biggest bag.  It was the first time I experienced such.

Everything you buy in this town, whether it be groceries, school supplies, take-out food, hardware items, and what-not, the brown bag (or box) it is!... Or, you can bring your own bag.  Upon learning that it was an ordinance implemented by the local government, I can't help but feel utmost respect and admiration towards the government officials and the locals as well.  To be able to do that takes one hell of a lot of discipline, for people are not always amenable to changes in their ways.  Kudos to the people of Los Banos!  Since the implementation of this ordinance in Los Banos, I heard that 10 more municipalities and cities in the Philippines have passed the same ordinance.

I just realized that in the past, the Philippines have slowly been becoming eco-friendly.  I remembered first seeing the bio-degradable plastic bag way back... say, a few years ago.  I know the SM chain of stores started it, then National Bookstore, and some others followed suit.  I do not believe that plastic bags can ever be bio-degradable but I've personally seen that, through time, the bags become brittle, its components slowly disintegrate, and can be easily crushed much like burnt paper.  Now, I am a believer!  Hahaha!

And then there are those stores that assign a certain day or days in a week as "bring your own bag" day.  SM stores, for one, has the M.O.B. (My Own Bag) Day where customers who do not bring their own bag will have to pay P2.00 (I think) for each plastic bag used for their purchases.  A meager amount, I know, which is why I hope they would charge more to encourage people to bring they own bag.

A lot of other stores, on the other hand, only use paper bags as their usual packaging ~ which is good!  At least they do not contribute to the tons of non-recyclable plastic bags that lay around garbage dumps for years and years.  Clothing and shoe stores are usually the ones that utilize the paper bag.  Top of mind would be Marks & Spencer, Zara, Girbaud, The Body Shop, Folded & Hung, Penshoppe, Bench, and a whole lot more.

I wish someday the Philippines would become a plastic bag-free nation.

We'll get there... one small step at a time.

God Gave Me You

For all the times I felt cheated, I complained
You know how I love to complain
For all the wrongs I repeated, though I was to blame
I still cursed that rain
I didn't have a prayer, didn't have a clue
Then out of the blue

God gave me you
To show me what's real
There's more to life than just how I feel
And all that I'm worth is right before my eyes
And all that I live for though I didn't know why
Now I do,
'Cause God gave me you

For all the times I wore my self pity
Like a favorite shirt all wrapped up in that hurt
For every glass I saw, I saw half empty
Now it overflows like a river through my soul
From every doubt I had, I'm finally free
Now I truly believe

God gave me you
To show me what's real
There's more to life than just how I feel
And all that I'm worth is right before my eyes
And all that I live for though I didn't know why
Now I do
'Cause God gave me you

In your arms I'm someone new
With every tender kiss from you
Oh, must confess
I've been blessed

God gave me you
To show me what's real
There's more to life than just how I feel
And all that I'm worth is right before my eyes
And all that I live for though I didn't know why (didn't know why)
Now I do (I finally do),
'Cause God gave me you (God gave me You)

GOD GAVE ME YOU...

A beautiful song indeed!  I think anybody who knows how it is to love, be loved, and get hurt can so much relate to this song.  When you think you are at your lowest point and there's nowhere else to go, God somehow gives you something or someone to hold onto... and hopefully, be there no matter what.  For me, finding that "someone" who would complete your life is like finding the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

FACEBOOK: First Generation

(re-blogged from Blogs@Juice)

It's almost impossible to imagine that Facebook passed the half-billion membership mark almost a year ago, in July 2010, which means that Mark Zuckerberg's little social website will most likely surpass 1,000,000,000 members by the time it reaches its 10th birthday in February 2014.

We can imagine the first ever member of Facebook if it started at the Creation.

Here are a few more Facebook statistics:

> 50% of active users log on to FB on any given day
> The average user has 130 friends
> FB users spend a total of 700 Billion minutes on the site each month

Galileo would be impressed. Facebook is truly changing the way we view our world.

Mark Zuckerberg is the Isaac Newton of this Millenium.

So what will Facebook evolve into? It's already an important a utility as the telephone.

Charles Darwin ought to give us a pretty good idea of evolution.

One thing's for sure. Facebook will be around for a long, long, long time.

Until an extinction event happens again?

The Artist in Me... or Not!

I have a penchant for the ARTS; but I am not an artist.  I am artistic and creative though... in my own way.

My fascination in art started when I was about 5 or 6 years old, I think.  I remember always looking forward to art class - cutting, pasting, coloring, painting and the like.  I was amused at how cut pieces of paper, paper chads or anything for that matter, can create beautiful artworks.  When I got into high school, I began sketching.  Started with 3D shapes, then on to anything I felt like drawing in random moments, mostly objects of nature.  I can still recall lugging my sketchbook when going for walks in the park, to malls, on family vacations - almost everywhere.  But when I tried my hand in sketching people, I struggled at the task. :(  Damn! I just couldn't get the hands and face right! A friend, an artist-photographer, told me to start with the hands.  He said once I get the hands right, the face is a piece of cake.  But I got stuck on the hands and moved no further. Realizing I'm not cut out for that, I limited myself to objects and abstracts - I'm better at it. Hehe!

But my trying-to-be-an-artist-of-sorts was short-lived though.  A lot of things had happened since. I don't get to draw or sketch much anymore, if none at all.  Had I kept at it, I guess I would've been good (or not!).

I never lost the fascination and appreciation for art though.  When I get the chance, I try to visit art exhibitions as I find a sense of peace and familiarity to it.  Else, I go out and find art in the most random of things and capture them in photographs.  I realized that art isn't just for those who excel in drawing, sketching, sculpting, painting, and the like.  It is more of having an "eye" and a "heart" for it.  There is art all around... you just have to look at it from a different angle to see and appreciate the beauty.

My first few desperate attempts at photography using my phone cam (sucks!).  Needs a hell lot of improvement, I know.  With practice, I'll get it down to a T pretty soon.

God vs. Science: A Good Read

This has been circulated in e-mails and posted in numerous blogs and websites.  It is something to read about and ponder on.  I'm not sure of the story's veracity but it's a very good read nevertheless...

“Let me explain the problem science has with Jesus Christ.” The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.
“You’re a Christian, aren’t you, son?”
“Yes sir,” the student says.
“So you believe in God?”
“Absolutely.”
“Is God good?”
“Sure! God’s good.”
“Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?”
“Yes.”
“Are you good or evil?”
“The Bible says I’m evil.”
The professor grins knowingly. “Aha! The Bible!” He considers for a moment.
“Here’s one for you. Let’s say there’s a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?”
“Yes sir, I would.”
“So you’re good…!”
“I wouldn’t say that.”
“But why not say that? You’d help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn’t.”
The student does not answer, so the professor continues. “He doesn’t, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?”
The student remains silent.
“No, you can’t, can you?” the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.
“Let’s start again, young fella Is God good?”
“Er…yes,” the student says.
“Is Satan good?”
The student doesn’t hesitate on this one. “No.”
“Then where does Satan come from?”
The student : “From…God…”
“That’s right. God made Satan, didn’t he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Evil’s everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything, correct?”
“Yes.”
“So who created evil?” The professor continued, “If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.”
Without allowing the student to answer, the professor continues: “Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?”
The student: “Yes.”
“So who created them?”
The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. “Who created them? There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.
“Tell me,” he continues onto another student. “Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?”
The student’s voice is confident: “Yes, professor, I do.”
The old man stops pacing.. “Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?”
“No sir. I’ve never seen Him”
“Then tell us if you’ve ever heard your Jesus?”
“No, sir, I have not.”
“Have you ever actually felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?”
“No, sir, I’m afraid I haven’t.”
“Yet you still believe in him?”
“Yes.”
“According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?”
“Nothing,” the student replies. “I only have my faith.”
“Yes, faith,” the professor repeats. “And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.”
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own. “Professor, is there such thing as heat?”
“Yes,” the professor replies. “There’s heat.”
“And is there such a thing as cold?”
“Yes, son, there’s cold too.”
“No sir, there isn’t.”
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet.. The student begins to explain.
“You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have anything called ‘cold’. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.”
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.
“What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?”
“Yes,” the professor replies without hesitation. “What is night if it isn’t darkness?”
“You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? That’s the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?”
The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. ”So what point are you making, young man?”
“Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.”
The professor’s face cannot hide his surprise this time. “Flawed? Can you explain how?”
“You are working on the premise of duality,” the student explains. “You argue that there is life and then there’s death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.”
“Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?”
“If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do”
“Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?”
The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.
“Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?”
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.
“To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.”
The student looks around the room. “Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor’s brain?” The class breaks out into laughter.
“Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor’s brain, felt the professor’s brain, touched or smelled the professor’s brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir. So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?”
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable.
Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. “I guess you’ll have to take them on faith.”
“Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,” the student continues. “Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?”
Now uncertain, the professor responds, “Of course, there is. We see it everyday. It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.”
To this the student replied, “Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God.. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God.
God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

Falling in Love...

For me, LOVE, when it happens, comes in two phases - FALLING IN LOVE & BEING IN LOVE.

"Falling" is a perfect word because it's a lot like stumbling (into it).  It comes all of a sudden that you don't even realize it.  You fall into a very deep emotion that, at first, will catch you off guard.  With it comes a feeling of lightheaded-ness and extreme joy and happiness that is so overwhelming & unexplainable.  "Being in love" is when you realize that you are, indeed, in love. You feel a sense of selflessness that you never thought you are capable of, or that you can ever feel so deeply for a person.

Such was the case when I met my man.  He came oh so suddenly that before I even realized it, I was already deeply in love with him.  He brought out the best in me and made me a better person.  He taught me to look at things differently and changed the way I look at life in general.  He showed me that life is not always as good as it seems nor is it a bed of roses; but that love can be unconditional.  He made me realize my potentials and brought out the strength within me that I never thought I had.  I guess I would never be as strong and determined as I am now if not for him.  Actually, I think I would not be the person I am now had I not met him.  His sincerity, strength, passion and unconditional love has made me yet a much stronger and better person than I was before I met him.  I just hope I did the same to him, too.

I don't know of the reasons why I fell in love with him... even now.  Well, I don't think I really need any reason for it.  I just know I love him to bits and that is all that matters to me.  Cliche as it may sound, but it is true that when you finally meet the one meant for you, he would really complete you.   Without him, your world will never be the same.

I realized that you may love someone for a thousand & one reasons, or none at all - for words or reasons are not enough to even begin to describe or explain how you feel.  But reason or no reason, I think unconditional and selfless love brings out the best in every person.

The Filipino Spirit... Seriously!

I found this in some Philippine websites and blogs.  Most mention Bill Gates, others Steve Jobs.  I just thought it worth re-blogging...

---------------------------------------

Bill Gates organized an enormous session to recruit a new Chairman for Microsoft Europe.

Exactly 5,000 candidates assembled in a large room.

One candidate is MARIO DIMACULANGAN.

Bill Gates: Thank you for coming. Those who do not know JAVA may leave.
2,000 people leave the room.

MARIO says to himself, 'I do not know JAVA but I have nothing to lose if I stay. I’ll give it a try.'

Bill Gates: Candidates who never had experience in managing more than 100 people may leave.
2,000 people leave the room.

Mario says to himself, 'I never managed anybody but myself, but I have nothing to lose if I stay.
What can happen to me?' So, he stays.

Bill Gates: Candidates who do not have MBAs may leave.
500 people leave the room.

Mario says to himself, 'I left high school at 15 but what have I got to lose?'
So, he stays in the room.

Lastly, Bill Gates asked the candidates who do not speak Serbo-Croat to leave.
498 people leave the room.

Mario says to himself, 'I do not speak one word of Serbo-Croat but what do I have to lose?'
So, he stays and finds himself with one other candidate.

Everyone else has gone.

Bill Gates joins them and says, 'Apparently, you are the only two candidates who speak Serbo-Croat, so I’d now like to hear you have a conversation together in that language.'

Calmly, Mario turns to the other candidate and says 'Ano ba yan, dong, tayo na lang ang naiwan dito?'

The other candidate answers, 'Ewan ko ba, pare, bakit nga ba sila nagsilabas?'

---------------------------------------

That's the Spirit!  No What If's or What Could Have Been's.
