Musings on "Love Rain" (Part 3)

I am both happy and sad as Love Rain concluded its final episode ~ happy because I got the ending I hoped for and sad because it has come to an end.  I kinda wish there were 6 or so more episodes 'coz I hate to see this beautiful and heartwarming drama end.

As the drama came to a close, I can't help but look back and think of the things it has stirred in me in the past 2 months.  Yes, the story and plot were simple but I think there is more to it than that - to me, it just absolutely hits HOME.

Let me share with you my thoughts on the characters of the drama. I am pretty sure some were able to relate to one or more of these characters.  I guess I'm a combination of Yoon Hee and Ha Na, but if push comes to shove, I can be a Hye Jung, too! ;-)

Seo In Ha

Some may say he is a coward... maybe so.  But for me, he never was. Putting other people's feelings before your own isn't cowardice but rather selflessness and courage.  It takes a helluva a lot of courage and willpower to do that. Although not one to freely express his thoughts and feelings, In Ha is a very considerate person if you look deeper. He has a really soft heart and would rather sacrifice himself and get hurt than see the people he values most suffer from it.  Until the very end, he sacrificed and placed his happiness in the happiness of another.  And this time around, it's his son Joon. Well worth the sacrifice, I should say.

Kim Yoon Hee

To me, she is the epitome of what a mother is. She is not only a mother to her daughter, Ha Na, she is also a friend.  And there's nothing she wouldn't do for her.

Meek and mild as she is, she has an unbelievable strength within her.  Probably because of all the pains she had gone through in life - losing her parents, falling ill at such a young and tender age, surviving from the illness, going through the heartaches and pains of a first love that never was, raising Ha Na alone, and a whole lot more.  She is a survivor, literally and figuratively.  And I admire her for her strength and courage.

Seo Joon

He is, after all, his father's son.  Sarcastic, insensitive, and indifferent at the beginning, which earned him a lot of nicknames for himself - asshole, devil, and whatnot -  it was a result of being taken for granted and hurting all his life.  As a pawn in the middle of a dysfunctional family, he learned to cope with it differently - by masking his feelings with utter hostility and roughness towards everyone around him, like he doesn't have a care in the world.  When he met his match in bubbly and considerate Ha Na, his natural self came out.  Love has completely changed him into the sweet, gentle, romantic, and thoughtful person that he actually is.  He and Ha Na were a match "made-in-heaven" for they complement and bring out the best in each other.

Jung Ha Na

Whereas her mother (Yoon Hee) is quiet and soft-spoken, Ha Na on the other hand, is so full of life.  But I think that is the extent of her being the exact opposite of her mom.  Deep within, they are actually no different from each other.  She has her mother's strength, which allowed her to endure the pains she went through with Joon. Ha Na may be a sweet and mild-mannered person, but her steadfast character cannot be questioned.  When she wants to get her point across, she can be tough and stubborn about it.  And once she makes up her mind, nothing can be done to change it.

Baek Hye Jung

Much as I hate her, I do understand her.  She just loves In Ha to a fault.  Deprived of the only love she ever wanted and hoped for in life, her anger at Yoon Hee for being the very reason for this has engulfed her very being that she has pushed away all the people around her without actually intending to.  She is the word b**** personified.  She sincerely loves her son Joon though, she just has a different way of showing it.  I like how the story gave justice to her character in the end.  She is after all, an understanding person, but with a very sharp tongue. :-)

Han Tae Sung

Though he knew his feelings for Ha Na may never be reciprocated in the same way, he continues to love and care for her.  To me, that is loyalty... or could it be stupidity?! :-))  Nah, Tae Sung is a loyal and dependable person, someone who would always be there whenever you need him.  His gentle and receptive nature can sometimes be to his detriment as it makes him look so pathetic.  He is a great person but I pity him for he never really got over Ha Na.  I think any girl would be lucky to have him and be loved by him for his loyalty is without a doubt.

Lee Sun Ho

A true friend.  He kept his unrequited love for Ha Na to himself.  He never took advantage of the situation even during the most vulnerable moments of the relationship.  He even went out of his way to try to get them back together. He was always a witness to Ha Na's pains, and in doing so, was also hurting himself the most in the process.  Sun Ho is like a ray of sunshine in a gloomy day.  He always seems be there whenever you needed a shoulder to cry on, or someone to listen and cheer you up.

Lee Mi-Ho

Mi Ho is actually a sweet girl notwithstanding the b****y and annoying side of her personality.  She can be affectionate and understanding, not to mention loyal and devoted, when she wants to be.  She is so fixated on Joon (who wouldn't?! XD) but it proves that she would do anything for someone she cares and values so much.

I will surely miss Love Rain.  My Monday and Tuesday nights will never be the same without it. :-)

Musings on "Love Rain" (Part 2)

Let me start where I left off in my previous post, Musings on "Love Rain".  When I said that Life presents a lot of second chances, and once you get your chance, seize it, hold on to it, and fight for it... well, what In Ha did to get Yoon Hee back is a perfect example.

Do not let things of the past hinder you from pursuing what you've always wanted - tangible or not - most especially when it's surely worth fighting for.  I think everyone deserves a second chance at anything, more so in matters of the heart.

I never imagined that a drama would make me contemplate on quite a lot of things about life -- a drama is a drama, it is not real.  But as you would have it, "Love Rain" did.  Perhaps because it's a masterpiece with a concept that is within the realms of reality that I can perfectly relate to it.

On 27 April at 11 am in Korea, many Japanese tourists gathered in the vicinity of Mapao, Sangsu-dong, Seoul to catch a glimpse of the filming venue of Keun-chan, Jang Keun Suk. They could not move close to him, but were still very happy that they saw him.

On 27th morning at Sangsu-dong, KBS 2TV drama “Love Rain” airing on Monday and Tuesday had a open press conference at their filming venue. The filming cast only had a short sleeping time from when they ended filming at Chuncheon, Kangwon province at 3 am and travelled to Seoul and started their filming in Seoul at 6 am.

At the press conference, JKS mentioned, “Basically, we have started live filming (*broadcast speed caught up with filming speed). Only sleep 2 to 3 hours a day. It feels like a dream when I’m awake.”

At every filming venue, JKS’ Japanese fans can be seen. JKS: “I also don’t know how they know to come here. Many fans are here to tour Korea and coincidentally come across the filming.”

Musings on "Love Rain"

Love Rain is a Korean drama that depicts a 1970's pure love and a love from the present day at the same time. It shows how the offsprings of a previous ill-fated couple, who met in the 1970s, managed to meet and fall in love. Seo In Ha and Kim Yoon Hee, an art student and a shy beauty, met and fell in love with each other during college in the 1970s, but unfortunately their love was fated to never be. Now in the present 21st century Korea, Seo In Ha's son, Seo Joon (a liberal photographer) meets and falls in with the daughter of Kim Yoon Hee, Jeong Ha Na, a cheerful and energetic girl who's personality is different from her mother's. Will their love for each other keep them together or will they have to face the same fate as their parents?

Eight episodes into the drama and it had me pondering on times past and present. I was comparing "eras" and coming to some realizations of sorts, nay, eye openers.  They are not realizations in the strict sense of the word, for these are things that we actually know about but have not really paid attention to or given much thought.  Though the drama dealt mostly on the topic of love and will play around with your emotions, I think it did not fail to strike a familiar chord in everyone.

First off, the laid back life in the 70s era is a stark contrast to the fast paced and so-called digital era of today. I kinda wish I can go back to that time when each and every moment of life seems to be savored, revered and treasured; wherein the sincerity and simplicity of pure love can be seen and experienced.  I am not saying that this is not possible at this day and age.  It's just that it is quite rare and hard to come across with nowadays.  Come to think of it ~ finding that one person, among millions all over the world, who completes you (cliche as it may sound); and regardless of time and space, still makes your heart do flips and somersaults, is something short of a miracle.  Yes, love... and I mean true love, can do that to you.

Love often comes in unexpected ways, places, and circumstances (It did to me!).  You don't have to go looking for it (especially to those who think they are doomed to single-blessedness... but then again, what's wrong with that?!).  Anyway, what I meant to say was, love will come to you.  At times, it is so simple yet abrupt and will stop you dead on your tracks but you know in your heart, without a doubt, that this is it (like in the case of Seo In ha) or unexpected and extraordinary that it's staring you right in the face and you don't even realize it, or choose not to acknowledge it (like what happened to Seo Joon).  But whichever way it is, true love stands the tests of time.

Seeing the difference of how love is in the two eras, it was somewhat an eye opener. In this modern life where it often takes a back seat, the rarity and scarcity of finding love in its purest sense is quite glaring. And those who did, but have been so caught up in the complexities of the times, often take for granted that which has brought them together in the first place, and the reason why they stayed together through the years. Cheesy, I know!  But I guess LR has that effect on me.  I am a hopeless romantic (or so I think I am) and it breaks my heart that it seems selfless and unconditional love has become the exception rather than the norm, or it could just be me.

Another thing I've come to realize, and this is something that is often overlooked, is that life, no matter how unfair it may seem, presents a lot of second chances. So when you get your second chance, seize it, hold on to it, and fight for it!  Chances are, if you did not win the first time, you will this time around.  And if you still don't, it is not meant to be (or I'd like to believe that greater things are bound to happen).  The point is, at least you tried your damnedest best and hardest and learnt the lessons along the way.  After all, that is what matters the most.

Well, I guess this is just the start of more realizations-of-sorts for me 'coz the drama presents a lot of ideologies, perceptions, and realities of Life and Love, which is why I am hooked on it; and not to mention the fact that it's top-billed by the one Hallyu star who is, and forever will be, first in my heart.  As the drama progresses, I will share more of them here.

Love Rain: JKS as Seo Joon in 2012

Jang Keun Suk once more proves what a chameleon he is when it comes to acting.  He has transformed into yet another character so befitting of him.  I don't know many Korean actors, but to me, no one could have played the character Seo Joon better other than JKS.

From a "Show-off" to "Geun-chan"

“I’m actually Prince of Asia, but…”, even though he said like this, we don’t feel unpleasant. In this way, he has no qualms about describing himself as such. He is the very person, Actor Jang Keun Suk. He celebrates 20 years as an actor this year, but it’s been only a couple of years since his merits started to be appreciated. JKS, who played the role of one of the children in the drama “Fairy Keommi”, has eventually become a top runner of the Hallyu boom. How did he succeed to grab the public’s attention? We have high expectations for the future of this smart young actor.

Was this boy a real show-off?

Jang Keun Suk debuted as a child model when he was six. Since then, he appeared on several dramas such as “Ladies in the Palace” and “Fairy Keommi”. In this way, he solidified his position as a child actor. When he turned seventeen, he appeared on “Nonstop 4″ and attempted to change him into an adult actor. However, he didn’t draw much attention.

"Love Rain" On Site Interview

credit: Cri-J & U 袢 Weibo Chinese translation HALO
Chinese to English Translation: Sarah Ye of Eels Club International

New Drama “Love Rain” vs. Classic “Winter Sonata”

10 years after ‘Winter Sonata”, the making team reunited. This time the leading actors are two big stars: Jang Keun Suk and Yoona (SNSD). The 2012 Spring Drama “Love Rain” resumed shooting under the severe cold snowy weather, but supports came from fan crowds on the shooting site from morning to night. This really made this drama is highly expected.

PD Yoon always uses his unique camera to catch sentimental and pure beauty just like a water color painting. The story has two parts - the 70s and modern years. Love Rain is a love story that happens in the youth year with pure love.

Jang Keun Suk plays a sentimental art student Seo In Ha and Seo Jun (In Ha’s son) who is free-spirited on both career and love life. He plays two different roles. Same as Yoona who plays Jang Keun Suk’s lover. She plays the quiet & shy beauty Kim Yoon Hee and the bright bubbly Ha Na (Yoon Hee’s daughter). KBS will air the drama on March 26. This drama has already topped the expectation over “Winter Sonata”. It was even already decided to have DVD version.

Love Rain: The 2012 Setting

Since the launch of the KBS Love Rain Official Website, photos have been circulating all over the net and excitement for the new drama has hyped up, especially for the followers of the two main leads, Hallyu Star Jang Keun Suk and YoonA of SNSD.

The contemporary looks of the main characters have been revealed and it was a beautiful transformation from the warm, homey, and rustic 1970s characters.

From the warm & gentle art student Seo In Ha in the 1970's, Jang Keun Suk becomes the very direct, free-spirited & ill-tempered photographer Seo Joon in 2012, the son of  his character in the 70s.

Here comes "Love Rain" (Part 2)

credit: Weibo
English translationg (from Chinese):  Sarah Ye of Eels Club International

The main characters of the drama described...

Seems like a very beautiful and interesting plot and story if you ask me.

Seo In Ha, an Art Academy Student, 23 years old

The diary she lost, he read it with sad feelings for many nights. His 20 year-old heart was filled in by her then.

He is an art student. Just like a Monet painting, he has a gentle face with a smile like sunshine.
He was called genius because of his great drawing talent. He is also famous for his interest – music. He writes music and lyrics and he is pretty talented on that, too.
And he is from a wealthy family.
If there is an “unfairness” that exists, then it is because of him.
All the girls would give him their hearts, but he doesn’t really care.

Kim Yoon Hee, Domestic College Student, 21 years old
The long bench in front of art academy; the baby breath bouquet; the rain on that day; the time they went to see the sunset together at the beach, her 21 year-old spring and summer she spent with him and that was her happiness.

She has long hair, pale skin, she wears wavy dress and white socks. Yoon Hee has an innocent face with two big beautiful eyes that can smile, so does her long hair.
She was born to a decent family and with a carefree upbringing, but she lost her parents when she was very young and her grandmother raised her up. Because of the family economy, she has to do several jobs. So it is a luxury thing for her to go to the music tea house to listen to the boys play music. Her diary is the only place she can talk about her story.

Lee Dong Wook, Medical School Student, 23 years old

I may have had over 1000 girl friends, but true love is only once. I want to be a person who can be even better than Elvis Presley

He is the popular DJ of the school’s music tea house, “sara B.” His handsome face and clever eloquence made him the “Casanova” of the girls.
He always has enthusiasm to everything. He knows how to enjoy life, but under that he has a dark secret. His father is the younger son of a famous politician family, but he fell for a woman who was from a temptress place, and then they had Dong Wook. So Dong Wook can barely remember anything about his mother.

Bae Hye Jung, Domestic College Student, 21 years old.

She looks like “Natalie Woods” so she is the queen of many college boys’ dream.
She is from a wealthy family, very self-centered. Her straightforward and fearless character is her charisma.
She always hangs out with In Ha, Dong Wook and Chang Mo, so the girls admire her position. She only pays attention to In Ha, but he never looks at her. She wants In Ha to be hers only.

Kim Chang Mo, a Law School Student, 23 years old

He is from the countryside, when he passed the exam and got accepted by the university, he became famous in his village even the logistics officer came to visit him and encouraged him.
When he came to Seoul, in his hands there were no books but only a guitar.
Because of his poor family, he can’t afford to live in the dorm. In Ha let him in and lent a place for him. He goes to “sara B” everyday just like he works there. He does not have an outstanding appearance and he is poor, but if you hear him sing you will never forget him.

Na In Sook, a Domestic College Student, 21 years old

She is a wealthy girl but doesn’t have much of common sense.
She is talkative and mean to others, but in fact, she doesn’t want to hurt anybody. She is kind of cute with her silliness.
She always fights with Chang Mo. But one day she saw Chang Mo’s sexy abs and that was it. She totally fell for him.

Here comes "Love Rain" (Part 1)

It's now just 24 days more to go before the much awaited Korean drama "Love Rain" is broadcasted on KBS on 26 March 2012.  The drama is top-billed by Hallyu star Jang Keun Suk and singer Yoona.  It's official site finally opened yesterday (content is all in Korean though).  Here's a glimpse of what to expect from it.

Love has two faces, happiness and sadness.
Happiness and sadness… contrasting factors exist as unity only in love.
It’s a miracle.
