English Translation (from Chinese): Sarah Ye of Eels Club International

"I WILL TAKE CARE OF NUNA."

This is a movie that Geunjang would like to do since he was 20 years old.

Q: A man is taken as a pet, this is an unimaginable story. Let’s listen to what they felt about this story when they first read it.

K: When I first read the script a few years ago, I didn’t have any special feeling about it. As the years passed, maybe also because I grew older, I felt the role became more and more close to my character. I kind of feel that to live with a younger man and raise him as a pet, that’s really not bad. Even if I just said that, in reality this is difficult to happen. But we can always have fun in the movie.

J: I think this story is very interesting. It’s a movie I would like to do since I was 20 years old. Now, I feel fortunate that I could be in the production to make this movie. I really feel lucky about it. “Momo” - this role, you can only successfully portray him when you’re young. I’m happy that I did it.

Q: I heard that you were interested in the original work 5 years ago? Which part in the original was attractive to you?

J: In the script, the story is not only about a man as a pet. It told the progress of how Momo grew from “a pet” to a man. In this movie, you can see the cute side of him and also his charisma when he becomes a matured man.

Geunjang talked about a side of Kim Ha Neul that you would be surprised to know.

K: I normally give people the impression that I'm not an easy person to get to close to. Before this movie, I have never worked so closely with other actors who were in the same movie with me. Geunjang is very good at communicating with people. He always gets along with people around him. He is very warm and easy to get to close to. Not only that, he also pays attention to others and takes care of them. We do have a lot in common, just like Ji En and Momo in the movie. We work together very happily.

J: Ji En is a strong-minded professional woman. But she is sort of conservative when it comes to being with a man. She is very smart, too. After I did the movie together with nuna, I found out that nuna is actually different from Ji En.

K: That’s not true, we are the same, OK? I’m very strong-minded, too. (laughs)

J: Hahaha! So, I need to be by nuna’s side and take care of her! And as an actor, sometimes I need to be the lead. Ahh, this is not easy. (laughs)

The hottest kiss scene in history.

Q: Both of you have been in many movies before. The kiss scene in this movie, we think you won’t let the Japanese audience be disappointed. So it must be a scene that can make their hearts beat fast.

J: True. Before this movie, I did have lots of kiss scenes in other ones already. But this one was the first time that is so intense. It was like there were bells ringing from a faraway place. It was a very beautiful kiss.

K: Lie, lie. When we shot the scene, it was not at all that romantic.

J: Here she goes again. Actually, nuna was very pleased and enjoyed the loving kiss scene. And because this movie has this kiss scene is why I decided to do it.

K: Geunjang always likes to joke. You said that... I don’t know what to say. For the kiss scene, you seem to be the one who has more experiences.

J: What? So far, was I the first one?

K: Geunjang, if you are talking like this, how am I suppose to answer? Anyway, in fact, we did make a very beautiful scene (laughs).

Q: Ha Neul, is Geunjang always this way? Talks like a prince-holic?

K: Yes!!!

J: Prince-holic? No, I AM THE PRINCE!!!

Q: In the movie, there are lots of scenes that will make your hearts beat fast. So what do the two of you think a perfect date would be?

J: I love to cook so I would do Korean cuisine for her. And I love to read, too. I collected lots of good books. If we can read together at home, that would be very nice.

K: I love animals, I would like to go to the zoo to have a happy date.

J:  Ahh, in this case, just come to my house with me. After drinking, I will become the animal!!! (laughs)

Nishnippon Shimbun Interviews Jang Keun Suk & Kim Ha Neul

English translation (from Chinese): Sarah Ye of Eels Club International

Relationships can be concave and convex

Interview with Actor: Kim Ha Neul (33) and Actor/Singer: Jang Geun Suk (24)

The two were the leading actors in the movie “You’re My Pet.”

K: Geunjiang is very young. He debuted in very early years, so even if he is younger, actually he took care of me a lot. During shooting he was always very cheerful. I think because of this, he got the success he has today.

J: On the site, I’m always so enthusiastic. I learnt from nuna how to put feelings into acting and how to switch the mood.

A professional woman lives under one roof with her pet – a male dancer. She can be healed by the cute pet; she can spoil the pet as well. It’s kind of a colorful relationship between the two of them.

K: In the movie, it’s not only the relationship of an owner and her pet, it is also an interpersonal relationship and a relationship between a woman and a man. Because of these concave and convex relationships, it makes the story very interesting.

J: Yes, they are concave and convex relationships. When I was reading the script, I can see “a pet”, he is very cute and he also has grown with the love. I have a pet –Suni, I tried to observe from Suni’s point of view to see how to get more love from the owner.

K: I think “the pet” in the movie YMP is more romantic. He is very lovely and cute, but he also has his manly side. Actually, in the movie, they gave an ideal image of a man to a woman. This role suits Geunjang perfectly.

Geunjang’s mature charisma and young cute image has attracted so many fans.

J: When I look at the camera, to me it is not only a camera. Behind it, there are the eyes of all the audiences. Because of this, in front of camera, I show complete myself to the audience.

Last year, you debuted as a singer and became #1 on the Oricon chart.

J: The singer and actor side of me is like a switch when I feel low. But as soon as I stand on the stage to sing, I will be cheerful again. Right now, I’m preparing a new album.

To Ha Neul Chan, do you have this kind of switch, too?

K: I’m always only an actor so I don’t have this kind switch. But even I am only playing a role, I can still pull myself out of it very fast to show the real side of me. I want to build a “soul garden” in the depths of my heart.

What kind of role would you like to play in the future, what kind of profession?

J: I want to play an owner, a cold and cruel owner (laughs). I will travel between Korea and Japan a lot in the future. I hope I won’t need a translator to communicate with you guys so I’m trying hard to learn Japanese.

K: I still want to play an owner, even more ferocious (laughs). I will raise the pet up. This suits me well.

Oricon: Interview with Jang Keun Suk & Kim Ha Neul for YMP

credit: KSC
English translation: Sarah Ye of Eels Club International

( K: Kim Ha Neul / J: Jang Keun Suk )

J: The moment you are in love with someone: When you know her weakness.
K: The moment you are in love with someone: The feeling comes before you even know it.

YMP is the first movie featuring JKS, the most popular hallyu star in Japan, and KHN, “the Queen of Romantic Comedy Movie.” It tells of a woman and man in a relationship as owner and her pet. Come and listen to what they say about each other and some BTS stories, also about love in their real lives.

Q1: The first meeting was “cold”. This was the first time they play in a movie together. What’s their first impression of each other?

K: Normally, we should meet first on site for shooting, but we met before that. It was at a coffee shop to discuss the roles. He immediately joked with me and showed me his playful side. My first impression of him is that he seems to be a serious worker. We only discussed about the script and didn't have any other communication. So, I didn't know that he is a very lively person before the shooting. I was even sort of worried, but when the shooting started, I found out that he is actually a person who is full of energy and is very active, but also very serious and concentrated when acting.

J: I didn’t bring my agent, only the two of us talked about script. I thought I was just being like a dongsaeng who comes to visit a nuna. I said hello in a light way, but I don’t know if Ha Neul didn’t really pay attention to that or what, we only talked about the script and nothing else. So, I was thinking, “Is she a cold person?” And with that thought I came to shooting. But she is not cold at all. (laughs). I was just joking!

Q2: Before shooting, have you read the YMP manga or watched the Japanese version TV Series?

K: When I first read the script and learned about Ji En and In Ho’s roles in the movie, I felt the story is very unique and kind of difficult. Will the viewers really buy it? I was worried about it. But after I watched the Japanese version TV series, I think their world is really beautiful, and I immediately think it's going to be a movie that people will be attracted to and fall in love.

J: (Answered in Japanese) I read the script 4 years ago. At that time, I felt that this was a very cute and sweet story and I would love to see a movie or TV series made from it. Now, after 4 years and with the script in hand, “Finally I can play in a movie with a story I love.” I was really happy about it.

Q3: In real life, when is the moment that you feel you’re in love. In the movie, how did you produce the “love” moment?

K: The moment of feeling love... it comes before you even know it. If you really want to know which scene is “the moment,” I would say it is when Ji En and In Ho were playing on the bed and the two of them looked into each other’s eyes and was almost about to kiss. Actually, I really think even that scene is not that important, the feeling between them slowly changed before that scene.

J: In the beginning, In Ho is only a “pet” to Ji En. So she always acted as an owner, but little by little, she didn’t look for loyalty from In Ho but a feeling of living together and getting very close. In many ways after that, the feeling surfaced. In Ho was no longer a “pet” but a man in her eyes. So her real emotions started to show more and more.

Q4: What is it like if you love someone in real life?

K: When I was young, I had love of first sight. But now I don’t think that is going to happen. I will need a long time to know him and feel really good about him. Then, if I have a man who can really take care of me, I may fall for him.

J: Well, this… so are we really going to talk about me? (hahaha) When I love someone is the moment that I know her weakness. This weakness will be a difficulty for her but to me, it’s nothing. So when that time comes, I really want to love her and help her.

Q5: “Pulling down the shorts,” that was an exciting scene. Ji En was giving In Ho a bath in the bathroom - the scene was pretty impressive. How was the atmosphere on site during the shooting of that scene?

J: That scene was not planned like I pull down my shorts and stand up in the bath tub. But I wanted to let the viewers see a funny In Ho so I decided to do that and I think Ha Neul nuna was pleased with it.

K: I didn’t know it was like that beforehand. When the shooting started and I saw Geunsuk do that unplanned act, I was totally shocked and so surprised to see it. Not only that, he even pulled up his shirt.Tthis was even more shocking to me. Of course, he has shorts under his shirt. Actually, at that moment, it was already not that important if he has it (underwear shorts) or not. Because of shock, I yelled out so loud and Geunsuk saw my reaction, so he thought I was pleased with it… but he put such a great acting to it, I think it was really not bad. (laughs).

J: Also, when shooting was finished, nuna seemed to leave reluctantly.

Q6: Is there a very romantic scene?

J: By the river when we were dancing together. Not only the music was so romantic, the whole site was just beautiful. I think Ha Neul nuna should remember that scene very well too? (laughs).

K: (laughs) Talk about romantic scene. I may have a different choice than Geunsuk. There was a scene after In Ho fought with Ji En’s ex-boyfriend and In Ho wanted to kiss Ji En, this was the most memorable scene to me. I (Ji En) understood In Ho’s feeling as a man. Ji En actually cared so much about In Ho. The complicated emotions and her state of mind at that moment really made me have a strong resonance.

Q7: It’s lonely when you’re by yourself. During shooting, did you see the surprising side of each other?

J: Nuna looks like a very beautiful and virtuous lady but in fact, she is a very strong woman. Just like Ji En in the movie, it is hard. Also, the viewer can see her dance alone. This was surprising to me and I felt it was so fresh.

K: Geunsuk always lights up the shooting site. If he saw that I was tired, he would do something with it. He is always full of energy, very active. But one day, I saw him sitting on the chair alone and he looked lonely. I kind of understood that he had that kind of lonely moments, too. (hehehe).

Q8: In Japan, there are lots of professional women and many never even fall in love. Those women, after they watching the movie, they understand Ji En and In Ho’s relationship and they admire that kind of feeling. So, what do you think about that kind of love like in the movie?

K: I think in a relationship, it doesn’t matter how it started. Actually, the most important thing is the process of  handling the love. Of course, there will be situations like in the movie, how it starts with that kind of relationship.

J: Like in the movie, In Ho was raised by an older woman. He wants the owner to come home. He deeply adores her, spoils her, depends on her, and even prepare a program for her, etc. If everyday is like this, isn’t that a happy thing? (In Japanese). Come to raise me! …if you have the confidence. (laughs)

Q9: Do you have thoughts that you don’t want to be raised but to be an owner yourself?

J: Hmmm, yes. I want that. It will be very interesting. I also want to revenge Ji En (laughs).

K: What do you want to do?

J: First, I will let her wash clothes, do the cleaning, etc. I think to a professional woman, these things are not advantages. We should start with those kind of things.

K: I hate doing those things.

J: Well then, let’s wait for YMP 2 to reverse the relationship between the two of them!
